From the first south-west swells in April to the quiet shoulder months: a month-by-month guide to surfing Nias, from a team that surfs it every day.

Ask ten surfers when to go to Nias and you will get ten answers. Here is ours, after many seasons of checking the swell from the beach every morning.
April to October is swell season: south-west swells from the Indian Ocean light up the reefs.
June to September brings the biggest and most consistent swells, and the most surfers.
April, May and October are our favourite months: good waves, lighter crowds, often calm mornings.
November to March is smaller and less consistent, but great for learning and for empty line-ups on the good days.
Months | Swell | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
April–May | Building, medium swells | Intermediate surfers, small crowds |
June–August | Biggest, most consistent | Experienced surfers chasing barrels |
September–October | Still solid, winding down | Everyone: good waves, fewer people |
November–March | Small to medium, less reliable | Beginners, longboards, relaxed trips |
When a strong south-west swell meets light winds, South Nias goes off. This clip from the end of May shows the Point at Sorake on one of the biggest days of the year:
Book your room and flights early for June to August.
Bring a step-up board if you plan to surf the reefs on big days.
Plan at least one flexible day for a trip to Lagundri Bay when the forecast is right.
Stay a little longer: the best days often come when you least expect them.
