Getting here

Nias is an island about 120 km off the west coast of Sumatra, in the province of North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara). Most guests arrive by plane at Binaka airport (GNS) near Gunungsitoli, the island's main town. Flight schedules change often, so always check the airlines' current timetables.

1. Fly to Indonesia

• Kualanamu International Airport, Medan (KNO): the closest international hub, with direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and other cities in the region.

• Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, Jakarta (CGK): the biggest hub, with connections from almost everywhere, then a domestic flight onward.

• Many travellers connect through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to Medan, or through Bali and Jakarta.

2. Fly on to Nias

From Medan there are daily domestic flights to Binaka (GNS) of about one hour on small propeller planes. Connections from Jakarta usually go via Medan. Surfboards travel as extra baggage: check the airline's rules and fees before you book, and pack boards in a padded bag.

3. From the airport to the homestay

Binaka airport is south of Gunungsitoli. The drive to the homestay on the north coast takes about two hours, depending on the road and traffic. Add the airport pickup to your booking and give us your flight number: our driver will wait for you with a sign and has room for boards.

By ferry from Sumatra

Ferries connect the port of Sibolga on the west coast of Sumatra with Gunungsitoli (and with Teluk Dalam in the south). They usually sail overnight and take most of the night. Sibolga is a long drive from Medan, or a short flight to Pinangsori airport. Schedules and ticketing change, so confirm locally a day or two before.

• Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out until 11:00; tell us if you arrive early or late

• Bring enough cash: there is no ATM near the homestay
